MS airfoils.
Xfoil is a really wonderful "numerical wind tunnel",
for low Reynolds airfoil conception use. I designed some airfoils, that are here presented, with the
ideas that lead the conception for each one.
They are sorted according to the date they were created. The last column indicates that some
airfoils were designed together, and are linked by a common cell.

Name :
Airfoils names does mean something, here are some keys for judging an
airfoil at first glance. This is a quite common way to name an airfoil. "MS" stands for
Matthieu Scherrer, my name
Général name : MS (camber %) / (thickness %) (main use)
For description of main use :
either :
- The letter from FAI rules :
- i for F3i
- b for F3b
- f for F3f
- ...
- GP for scale sailplanes ("Grande Plume" in french).
- FW for Flying Wings.

- Design ideas :
This series of airfoil is the result of reflexions made with JL Michot.
He wanted to build a large scale SB10, about 6m span. This is a high AR planform,
and root chord is only 200mm. Therefore really small Reynolds number in sight...
For the root, we then need thickness for an efficient spar, but also a good behavior
with small the Reynolds. The HQ3/15 was used as a basis, with in particular
the Reynolds issue to be improved.

We also needed a profile for the remainder of the wing,
less thickand willing to put up with decreasing Reynolds number along the span.
Simply an homotethical airfoil is appropriate, here is the same one with 11% thickness.
It makes a great progress compared to the HQ.

The profile was modified for better fitting at tip :
higher Czmax, and less momentum created. This is quite appreciable
on a wing with very great AR, that prevents a bit risks of fluttering. You have to pay it with a slightly
higher drag.
